“Beyond FE Stress Peaks: Critical Weld Fatigue Assessment in a Robotic Arm Base”
Finite Element Analysis produces stress contour plots that are easy to interpret for static strength — but for welded structures under cyclic loading, those same peak equivalent stress values can be profoundly misleading. This presentation walks through a real industrial case study: a welded steel base for a Stäubli TX2 140 robotic arm, assessed for fatigue in accordance with the FKM Guideline. We demonstrate why Von Mises stress is an insufficient criterion for weld fatigue, how the correct assessment requires directional stress components at the weld toe across systematically paired load cases, and why the combinatorial complexity of multi-load-case assessments makes manual workflows error-prone at any realistic model size. The presentation concludes with a live demonstration of automated weld assessment using LIMIT software, showing how the complete assessment chain — weld detection, FAT class assignment, load case pairing, and utilisation ratio computation — can be executed in minutes with full traceability to the FKM Guideline.
