What is LIMIT®?
LIMIT® is a software tool for performing static strength and fatigue assessments of welded and non-welded steel and aluminium structures. It was developed by CAE Simulation & Solutions GmbH (Vienna, Austria) and has been in commercial use since 2010. It works with stress and displacement results exported from your existing FEA software, so no change to your existing simulation workflow is required.
Why LIMIT®?
Performing a code-compliant weld fatigue assessment manually is a repetitive, time-consuming process that scales poorly with model complexity. For a structure with several hundred weld details, individual calculations easily reach the tens of thousands. Manual execution introduces real risk of error — a wrong FAT class or missed load case pair can lead to non-conservative results. LIMIT® handles this workflow automatically, delivering results that are fully traceable to the applicable code or guideline.
What LIMIT® Does
Automatic Weld Detection
Identifies welds directly from model topology. For shell models, this uses shared-node pairs with unique filtering to speed up the process.
Load Case Combination
Evaluates all combinations and identifies the governing pair per evaluation point, applying correct stress ranges and safety factors.
Report Generator
Generates fully documented, personalised assessment reports in HTML or LaTeX formats.
FAT Class Assignment
Automatically assigns fatigue parameters from internal libraries based on detected geometry and selected code. MultiEdit allows efficient batch-definition.
Sensor & Sections Technology
Sensor Tech extracts code-conforming stresses for solid models without shell meshes. Sections Tech enables assessment of weld roots modeled with solid elements.
Graphical Results
Displays utilisation ratios directly on the FE model for intuitive interpretation.
Assessment Types
LIMIT® covers three assessment types: static strength, finite life fatigue (variable amplitude), and infinite life fatigue (endurance limit / constant amplitude).
Industries
Used across mechanical engineering, railway, crane and lifting equipment, heavy machinery, plant engineering, and amusement ride industries — wherever welded structures must be assessed for fatigue or static strength in compliance with a recognised standard.
